Mombasa uniquely combines tradition and modernity. Smells of cinnamon, anise, curry are in the air at the Soko spice market in the old town. Fruit, vegetable and meat merchants clang loudly to the customers in the Digo Road, the people move slowly in traditional Arab robes through narrow, winding streets. In the old part of the 14 km² island of Mombasa, numerous buildings, food and clothing style testify to the influence of the Arab merchants who settled here. But Mombasa is by no means only influenced by the Arab culture. For centuries, there has been a lively cultural and economic exchange between India, Arabia, Europe and Persia. This is evidenced by the Hindu and Sikh temples, the Catholic cathedral and a Jain temple. Crucial for this is East Africa’s largest port Kilindini: import and export stronghold not only for Kenya, but also for u. a. Uganda and Rwanda. The tea market of East Africa is also here

Only 35 kilometers from Mombasa lies the Shimba Hills National Reserve, founded in 1968. The small mountain range offers dense rainforest and wide grassland for a variety of wildlife, including the sable antelope, which can only found here in entire Kenya. But also elephants, lions, waterbucks, many different species of monkeys, antelopes or buffalos. 111 species of birds live here, of which 22 are endemic.

Tiwi Beach, the final destination of the journey, is located 17km south of Mombasa and is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The Coconut Beach Boutique Lodge has retained the natural charm of an original beach hotel without concrete buildings. The hotel has 30 lovingly decorated rooms. Outstanding is the location directly at the Indian ocean with a 300m private beach and a coconut palm forest. Here turtles lay their eggs and you may be lucky enough to witness more than 100 mini turtles crawling out of the sand looking for the way into the ocean.

1st day: Arrival at Mombasa

The driver will welcome you in Mombasa. You will be transferred to the Pride Inn Hotel right in the center of the coastal city of Mombasa. From here you can hear the call of the muezin in the morning when the sun is rising. Welcome to Mombasa, a cultural seaside town worth exploring! Overnight at Pride Inn.

2nd day: Mombasa – Melting pot of cultures

After breakfast you will explore the historic old town. You will visit Fort Jesus, a Portuguese fortress built in 1593, the old port and the fruit and vegetable market. Lunch you will have at the Indian restaurant “Shehnai”, where authentic Mughlai dishes are served. Kenya’s cuisine, especially on the coast, is heavily influenced by Indian and Persian cuisine. Later you stroll through the traditional market, here everything is sold, which is useful in the household. Markets are even more present here in East Africa than back home. The colorful bustle is a must for anyone who wants to discover the “real” Africa. Now you are heading to the landmark of Mombasa, the elephant tusks on Moin Avenue. The tusks were commissioned during a visit by Queen Elizabeth to Mombasa in 1952 and have since become the emblem of the city. Tonight a special dinner awaits you: taking a ride on a traditional dhow, sailing past Fort Jesus, and being served a great seafood dinner. Enjoy the sunset, and later the lights of the slowly quieting city. Overnight at Pride Inn.

3rd day: Shimba Hills rainforest

In the morning you are leaving Mombasa. You cross the Kilindini Port with the Likoni ferry and are once again just in the middle of the tumult of coastal cultures. You drive along the south coast and then turn towards the Shimba Hills. A unique coastal rainforest awaits you. You will be transferred to Shimba Hills Lodge, a tree house hotel in the middle of the green rainforest. A wonderful place to relax and a surprising contrast to the experiences of the first days. Around the waterhole, that can be seen from the lodge’s rooms and restaurant, many animals come to drink. Overnight at Shimba Hills Lodge.

4th day: Gamedrive at Shimba Hills

Woken up in the green jungle, you will do a game drive to discover and observe the rare sable antelope that can only be found here. Not so easy to spot in the dense park are elephants. Waterbucks and African fish eagles are also at home here. Later you will drive back to the coast, straight to the Cococnut Beach Lodge and enjoy the palm-fringed dream beach to the fullest. The hotel is the headquarters of the Tiwi Turtle Police, a conservation project to protect turtles and protect their eggs from beach robbers. With a little luck, you can be there when newly hatched turtle babies wander into the ocean. Overnight at Coconut Beach Lodge.

5th – 7th day: Pure relexation!

Let yourself be pampered at Coconut Beach Lodge’s spa, enjoy the palm tree beach, refresh yourself in the pool in the beautifully landscaped grounds or go on one of the numerous excursions such as snorkeling, colobus monkey project and much more! Relax and walk barefoot on the beach, there is no better place than here. Overnight at Coconut Beach Lodge.

8th day: Departure

Today you will be transferred to Mombasa or Diani Airstrip to match your flight connecting program.
