4th day: Ascent of the vulcano Mt Longonot

Mount Longonot is a stratovolcano in Kenya, estimated to have erupted for the last time in the 1860s. It is located in the Great Rift Valley southeast of Lake Naivasha. Its name derives from the Masai word oloonong’ot, which means “mountain of many mountain ridges” or “steep spurs”. A 3.1 km trail runs from the park entrance to the crater rim and leads around the crater in a 7.2 km loop. A forest of small trees covers the crater floor and small clouds of steam rise from the crater walls. The entire tour (gate-around-the-rim-gate) of 13.5 km takes about 4-5 hours and allows necessary breaks – parts of the trail are heavily eroded and very steep. The height of the gate is about 2150 m and the summit at 2780 m. The mountain is home to many wildlife, especially zebras and giraffes. Mount Longonot is protected by the Kenya Wildlife Service as part of Mount Longonot National Park. You will be accompanied on this exciting ascent by an experienced guide.
